The village of Hickory Ridge is one of Columbia’s most scenic villages and the second largest. Quiet neighborhoods and beautiful, mature trees make up Hickory Ridge. Hickory Ridge is located close to the Middle Patuxent Nature Preserve and to downtown Columbia.
Neighborhoods in the village of Hickory Ridge include Hawthorn, Clary's Forest, and Clemens Crossing. The name Hickory Ridge comes from the original name of the tract of land it sits on. Clary's Forest comes from the original land owner John Clary (1734). Streets in Clary's Forest are named for William Carlos Williams. Street names come from Amy Lowell’s poems. Clemens Crossing is named after famed American author Mark Twain, otherwise known as Samuel Clemens. These street names come from Clemens' work.
The land surrounding Sierra Villas and Barnside in Clary's Forest originally belonged to the Kahler family farm. The farm's silo still stands among the condominiums.
What Makes Hickory Ridge Unique?
- Howard Community College - is a community college in Columbia, Maryland. HCC, in partnership with Prince George's Community College, also has a campus in Laurel that is known as Laurel College Center (LCC). In 1966, Howard Community College was founded by the Board of Education in Howard County and formally authorized by the Howard County Commissioners. That same year, HCC was approved as the State of Maryland's 14th community college.
- Howard County General Hospital - is a 219-bed, not-for-profit, health care provider located in Columbia, Maryland. Serving the community since 1973, the hospital, with a professional staff of over 800 physicians and allied health professionals, representing more than 70 specialties and subspecialties, and a workforce of more than 1,700, has grown into a comprehensive, acute-care medical center that provides a full range of services, including care for women's and children's care, surgery, cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, gerontology, psychiatry, emergency services, and community health education.
